Listeners Beware
Here’s the genesis of the song Designed Disabled. Right now all that’s tracked is drums. I hope to post mp3’s of the process of creating the final version of this song as we continue to work on it.
all music is ©2010 Brontosaurus
Drums are completely tracked and we are extremely proud of how they turned out. It looks like we’re shooting for 8 songs on this LP, 5 of which are completely worked out (in our minds at least) and another 3 which are still little musical babies that need love and attention so they can grow up to be like their brothers.
On the technical side of things the drums were set up in my living room, fairly close to my upright piano. We opened up the piano in the hopes that the loud banging drums would make the piano strings resonate and create some cool/weird overtones that would bleed into the mic’s. Also I placed a microphone in the next room over in order to get a more distant/roomy sound. We went with a standard drum mic techniqe with the following microphones:
Kick: AKG D112
Snare: Beyer M201
Rack: Oktava MK012
Floor: Audio Technica 4033
Overheads: Neuman TLM 193
Room Mic: Neuman U87
Each mic was run into a Sytek MPX-4a pre amp and then run directly into Tascam 48OB 8-Track tape machine. The output of the tape machine was then fed directly into Pro Tools for monitoring.
Next session we will begin to tackle NK’s guitar parts as well as begin to record some of the upright piano parts. I recently found a 100 year old upright Baldwin piano on craigslist (FREE!). It certainly has it’s quirks, but it’s gonna be awesome to have a real piano at my disposal for this album. And on a side note I must say it’s been really great being able to record drums and make a lot of noise for hours and not have to worry about getting complaints from the neighbors.
Lastly to our Chicago friends. We will be playing a free show this coming friday at Chicago’s favorite dive, The Mutiny. We go on at 10pm and are followed by our good friends We Love You. Hope you can make it.
